        Voyeureality

Voyeureality is the term invented for this series of paintings.

How do people connect with each other ? How do we see ourselves in the world? In the cult of personality, MySpace puts it all out there in a flash. It’s the great promoter and the great equalizer.

Girls and young women are deeply affected by popular culture. The way women represent themselves on MySpace is evidence of this. Magazines, tv shows and advertising tell us how we should look and act. There’s no such thing as overexposure.

Browsing MySpace feels voyeuristic. You enter someone’s life, and feel a part of it. My communication with the young women I contact has become part of the artistic process.

Communicating through the internet can create a false sense of intimacy. Is this replacing real human contact? I’m struck by how much people want to expose themselves to the ether. I don’t think that we know the impact of this medium yet, but exploring it is fascinating. As a group, this is a snapshot of our culture.
